Aftermath movie true story plane crash12/29/2023 ![]() ![]() Which is a shame as those two central performances – from Schwarzenegger and McNairy – are pretty much all that stand between Aftermath and a shorter shelf life. ![]() So, where does this leave Aftermath? The answer is simple: it makes it a proficient movie with two good central performances that never overcomes the style in which it was made. ![]() It’s as if someone, somewhere decreed that movies about negative emotions or tragedies or bad luck stories didn’t deserve to be produced in any other fashion. But that’s not true, and Lester and his cast and crew have opted for the dour, oppressive leanings that are on show in the finished product. It’s as if the movie is afraid that audiences will abandon it for want of trying, as if its focus on the mental anguish of two men connected by a terrible tragedy can’t be presented in any other way. Grief and guilt are sombre topics, and can contribute to some seriously affecting drama, but do we really need everything to look and sound so dreary?īecause everything about Aftermath is dreary. But while this is a movie about grief and guilt and the way both emotions can eat away at a person, Lester has made a parlous mistake in terms of the way the movie looks. Todd’s original score is appropriately cheerless and troubling. Colours are muted, the lighting makes indoor scenes look as if a thunderstorm is coming, and even the costumes have the air of having been chosen deliberately for their nondescript appearance. Even before the crash, where Schwarzenegger’s gruff but friendly Roman is over the moon at being reunited with his wife and daughter, the visuals are uniformly subdued. Unbeknownst to Roman, Jake is spending the evening with his wife and son, a situation that leads to further tragedy…įrom the outset, Elliott Lester’s approach to the script by Javier Gullón is to provide audiences with the gloomiest, bleakest movie he can manage. Nevertheless, Roman manages to find out where he lives, and travels there to confront him. He asks her if she can find out Jake’s whereabouts initially she refuses but eventually she agrees to tell him Jake’s new name and job, but not his address. One day, Roman is contacted by Tessa who tells him her book is ready to be published. Soon, Roman blames Jake for everything.Ī year passes, a year during which Roman gets by doing odd jobs as a carpenter, and Jake has settled into his new life. She leaves copies of articles she’s written on previous plane crashes as evidence of her sincerity, and it leads Roman to become aware of Jake’s existence and his role in the tragedy. Meanwhile, Roman receives a visit from a journalist, Tessa Gorbett (Ware), who intends to write a book about the collision. When his bosses advise him to start afresh with a new identity somewhere else – for his own good – Jake takes the deal and begins a new life as a travel agent, Pat Dealbert. Even though the circumstances of the crash were beyond his control, Jake hides away with his family – wife Christina (Grace) and young son Samuel (Nelson) – but even though they are supportive, his inability to deal with his feelings and the knowledge that so many people died “on his watch” causes his marriage to falter. While Roman is consumed by grief, Jake is consumed by guilt. Following his family’s funerals, he retreats from the world and remains at home. Of all the relatives of the victims, only Roman refuses to sign an agreement that effectively lets the airlines off the hook. ![]() Further subsumed by grief he waits for an apology from someone – anyone – from the airline companies involved, but is treated dismissively, and the compensation he’s offered is insulting. He poses as a volunteer at the crash site, but in a cruel trick of fate, he finds the body of his daughter. He can’t understand how it happened, and some part of him still clings to the idea that his wife and daughter somehow survived the collision. Roman is consumed by shock and anger and disbelief. When Flight AX 112 and Flight DH616 collide, causing the deaths of two hundred and seventy-one people, both men’s lives are changed forever. One is Roman Melnik (Schwarzenegger), a construction worker whose wife and pregnant teenage daughter (Sherrick) are aboard Flight AX112, and the other is Jacob “Jake” Bonanos (McNairy), the air traffic controller on duty when the collision happened. Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Scoot McNairy, Maggie Grace, Judah Nelson, Hannah Ware, Glenn Morshower, Mariana Klaveno, Martin Donovan, Jason McCune, Christopher Darga, Larry Sullivan, Kevin Zegers, Danielle Sherrick, Lewis Pullmanīased on a true story, that of the Überlingen mid-air collision which occurred on 1 July 2002, Aftermath examines the lives of two men affected by the tragedy. ![]()

Hana vu ft willow12/29/2023 ![]() ![]() Within the confines of her bedroom, Vu began experimenting with electro-pop and fuzzy, distorted indie pop. I wanted to be a part of that.”Īsked what she took away from her unconventional upbringing, she replies, “I just felt like I was doing something with myself.” “When I was a teen, that’s where all the cool kids were! They were always at the warehouse shows over the weekends. It all started with a simple desire: to belong. These scattered and scrappy memories of growing up in the punk and indie underground of a city as big as Los Angeles were crucial to Vu. “Then again, I mostly would play in parking lots or under an underpass … or in a bus.” ![]() When they closed down, or moved locations or whatever, people lost general interest,” Vu explains. There were a couple all ages, venues that were really big. anymore, but maybe I’m just like, you know, too old now to be in the know about it. “I don’t really see that there’s like a big DIY team community in L.A. That’s not to say the scene isn’t still alive, but a lot changed as Vu grew. She has been cultivating her sound since she was only 14, playing in bands around the once-burgeoning Los Angeles underground scene. Previous coverage of Vu has focused on her age and, to be fair, it is hard to separate Vu’s unbelievable talent from her youth. I catch myself forgetting Vu is only a few years younger than me, as she possesses an immense knowledge and wisdom that comes with being surrounded by the energy of Los Angeles. Whereas Taylor Swift crafted heartfelt confessionals of love and loss (and eventually revisited Red through a more mature lens), Vu expands upon the groundwork laid by sad-girl heroes such as Swift, Japanese Breakfast and Mitski with her own adolescent flair as she confronts the universe with a lifetime’s worth of knowledge ahead of her. Vu has entered her 20s with the breathtaking debut Public Storage, released in November. I didn’t mean to affirm that you looked like garbage.” However, I believe even if I did look bad, Vu would see the beauty in it. Estwing double sided axe12/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Between the two, I really like the precision chopping of the Estwing Tomahawk over the double bit axe. But anything organic that gets in its way is history. The pick is not sharp like a blade, but more of a blunt sharp, to coin an oxymoron. When you need a hole in something fast, the Estwing Tomahawk will deliver with the speed and force of a quality geology hammer. ![]() Protruding opposite the Estwing Tomahawk’s main feature is a powerful spike that is as deadly as is it is functional. ![]() Unlike the Double Bit axe, the Estwing Tomahawk has a vastly different back end. The proportions of this tomahawk’s design supports a fine woodworking talent that make the Estwing Tomahawk a great piece of camp gear for minor woodworking, kindling chores, and even some kitchen duties. The balance is wonderful, and the grip to blade ratio leans heavily toward small work. The Estwing Tomahawk is a precision chopper. Maybe not the world champion, but certainly a national champion. Like all Estwing tools I’ve had the privilege to use, the double bit axe preforms like a champ. This is certainly not a felling axe, but it would easily be a go-to camp axe, or bug out tool. For throwing, camp chores, and general small-scale slicing, a double-edged axe like this works great. But this is more of a case of redundancy than duality. Often double bits are ground at different angles for two distinct chopping experiences. The double bit axe has two of the same edges. So I’ll take the liberty and consider them together and both in the tomahawk family. I consider double-bit axes as those twice-as-big lumber tools that Paul Bunyan would have slung over his shoulder, not a two-pound 17-inch double-headed hatchet. Actually, Estwing only lists one head as a tomahawk but I am lumping their double-bit axe into the tomahawk category due to it’s size. In Estwing’s lineup of tools that fall under the axe/hatchet variety are a series of tomahawks that two head designs and a series of colors and handle options. I included the “ish” because one of the earth’s premier axe maker failed to market a “ tomahawk” but does have an excessively expensive “Outdoor Axe” that easily mimics a tomahawk for most practical purposes. To the point that any major knife or axe maker worth his or her survival salt makes a tomahawk or tomahawk-ish hand tool. These are single-bladed, pick iron variants of the same tools the Algonquian Indians used to crack skulls and carve up meat before the Europeans came to North America. Jumping into the 21st century, the tomahawk, and even “tactical tomahawk,” have entered the mainstream bug out vernacular with a vengeance.

Chimpanzee fight12/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In a typical sequence, the animal first discovered a deep tree hollow suitable for bush babies, which are nocturnal and weigh about half a pound. Eventually the researchers documented 22 instances of spearmaking and use, two-thirds of them involving females. But in that instance she was unable to follow the chimpanzee to see what she did with it. "I just knew right away that she was making a tool," Pruetz said, adding that she suspected - with some horror - what it was for. Pruetz recalled the first time she saw a member of the 35-member troop trimming leaves and side branches off a branch it had broken off a tree. That environment is very much like the one in which early humans evolved and is different enough from other sites to expect differences in chimpanzee behaviors. ![]() Unlike other chimpanzee sites currently under study, which are forested, this site is mostly open savannah. Pruetz and Paco Bertolani of the University of Cambridge made the observations near Kedougou in southeastern Senegal. Others crumple leaves and use them as sponges to sop drinking water from tree hollows.īut while a few chimpanzees have been observed throwing rocks - perhaps with the goal of knocking prey unconscious, but perhaps simply as an expression of excitement - and a few others have been known to swing simple clubs, only people have been known to craft tools expressly to hunt prey. Some chimpanzees slide thin sticks or leaf blades into termite mounds, for example, to fish for the crawling morsels. Scientists have documented tool use among chimpanzees for decades, but the tools have been simple and used to extract food rather than to kill it. "Really fashioning a weapon to get food - I'd say that's a first for any nonhuman animal." The new observations are "stunning," said Craig Stanford, a primatologist and professor of anthropology at the University of Southern California. Pruetz of Iowa State University, adding that it reminded her of the murderous shower scene in the Alfred Hitchcock movie "Psycho." "It was kind of scary." "It was really alarming how forceful it was," said lead researcher Jill D. In one case, after repeated stabs, a chimpanzee removed the injured or dead animal and ate it, the researchers reported in yesterday's online issue of the journal Current Biology. Then, grasping the weapons in a "power grip," they jabbed them into tree-branch hollows where bush babies - small, monkeylike mammals - sleep during the day. Using their hands and teeth, the chimpanzees were repeatedly seen tearing the side branches off long, straight sticks, peeling back the bark and sharpening one end. The landmark observation also supports the long-debated proposition that females - the main makers and users of spears among the Senegalese chimps - tend to be the innovators and creative problem solvers in primate culture. The multistep spearmaking practice, documented by researchers in Senegal who spent years gaining the chimpanzees' trust, adds credence to the idea that human forebears fashioned similar tools millions of years ago. Chimpanzees living in the West African savannah have been observed fashioning deadly spears from sticks and using the tools to hunt small mammals - the first routine production of deadly weapons ever observed in animals other than humans. ![]()
